Full mouth dental implants
What are full mouth dental implants?
- Fixed (non-removable) – your new teeth stay in place.
- Stable & secure – no slipping or adhesives.
- Natural appearance – designed to look, feel, and function like your own teeth.
Benefits of full mouth dental implants:
- Permanent solution to missing or failing teeth.
- Improved chewing ability and confidence.
- No slipping, adhesives, or bulky plates.
- Helps preserve jawbone structure and facial appearance.
- Long-term investment in oral health and quality of life.
The treatment process
At North Pittsburgh Oral Surgery, we use advanced technology and techniques to deliver predictable, life-changing results. Here’s what you can expect:
Consultation & planning
- Comprehensive examination, digital imaging, and 3D scans.
- Review of your dental and medical history.
- Digital treatment planning for precise implant placement.
Implant placement
Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone at specific angles and positions for maximum support.
Immediate Loading
- In many cases, a temporary fixed prosthesis can be attached to the implants the same day as surgery.
- This allows you to leave our office with a full set of functional teeth while the implants heal.
- Thanks to our in-house digital scanning and 3D printing capabilities, we can often design and produce your prosthesis on-site, reducing wait times.
Healing & Osseointegration
- Over several months, the implants fuse with your natural bone in a process called osseointegration.
- This creates a strong, stable foundation for your final restoration.
Final restoration
- Once healing is complete, we work with your dentist to attach a custom-designed, permanent prosthesis.
- Your final prosthesis is crafted to match your facial features, bite, and smile.
Who is the best candidate for full mouth dental implants?
You may be a candidate for full mouth dental implants if you have:
- Multiple failing teeth or severe dental disease.
- Complete edentulism (no natural teeth remaining).
- Loose, uncomfortable dentures.
- Sufficient bone structure to support implants (bone grafting may be an option if needed).
Bone loss happens fast!
Missing teeth cause 25% bone loss within the first year. Dental implants prevent this deterioration and are easier to place when teeth are first extracted.
Frequently asked questions
Will I really get teeth the same day?
In most cases, yes—you will leave the office with a full set of temporary teeth the same day your implants are placed. If the implants are stable at the time of surgery, we attach a temporary fixed prosthesis immediately.
However, in rare cases, the implants may not achieve enough stability during surgery. If that happens, you will still receive a denture to wear home, but it won’t be attached to the implants until they’ve had time to heal. This ensures the best long-term success and safety of your treatment.
Can I eat normally right after the procedure?
Proper post-op care helps ensure implant healing and long-term success.
Immediately after surgery:
- Rinse gently with saltwater or any prescribed rinse.
- Avoid brushing near surgical sites for a few days.
- Do not spit forcefully or use a straw.
As you heal:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- You may be instructed to use a water flosser or special cleaning tools around the prosthesis.
- Attend all follow-up appointments so we can monitor your healing closely.
Will I be in pain after the procedure?
Some swelling, soreness, or bruising is normal after full arch surgery, but discomfort is usually manageable. We’ll provide you with pain medication, cold packs, and thorough aftercare instructions to keep you comfortable during recovery.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are designed to be a long-term or permanent solution. With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, they can last 20 years or longer, often for life.
Am I a candidate for full mouth implants?
You may be a candidate if:
- You are missing most or all of your teeth in one or both arches.
- You’re in good general health and free of uncontrolled medical conditions.
- You have sufficient jawbone for implants, or are a candidate for bone grafting.
A comprehensive consultation and 3D imaging will help us determine if this treatment is right for you.
